VILE — Depopulate

Sonntag, Januar 11th, 2009

There isn’t much to say about this death metal album. That doesn’t really mean that it sucks, but this is SO thirteen-in-a-dozen. Fast drumming, brutal growls, quick guitar riffs… Suffocation meets Cannibal Corpse, so to say. They also make me think a bit of Cattle Decapitation. I also heard their other CD “Stench of the Deceased” and they both sound pretty much the same. Funny thing that Listenable Records says they are original. They aren’t. But they ARE brutal!! Do however listen to the song “Retalliation” which has black metal influences in the chorus!

Good CD but I have dozens of better albums at home…

Walls of Jericho is back with another killer album. The release of All Hail The Dead makes them an even more uprising force in the underground Hardcore scene. The power of this album is best described by Candace herself: “On this new record, I am thinking about things in a more sophisticated and personal way. These new songs are more clear-cut. I have incorporated more of my personal life in this record, and I really lay myself on the line. I share my heartaches and grief, what makes me tick and what destroys me. I want to share. I want to reach people who feel like they’re alone and give them a voice that allows them to be strong and know they will survive. On this new record, I didn’t want to hold back no matter what.”

Their sound doesn’t tend to lean towards the Metal genre, like you can hear in a lot of Hardcore bands nowadays, but gives you some of the true Hardcore flavour. And this time it all sounds better recorded and clearer. Candace is screaming the lungs out of her body with a kind of ferocity that makes you turn into a frenzy. Her vocals form a perfect combination with the catchy and very effective mosh guitar riffs.

I’ve seen them live before buying All Hail The Dead and I must say that their new songs sound more heavy on stage than they do on the album. Mainly because of the contrast between the pounding double bass at the live performance and the rather flat bass sound on All Hail The Dead. That doesn’t stop me from regularly spinning the album, though.

Nothing but great respect for the way Walls of Jericho stick to their beliefs and always give the crowd a crushing performance. Luckily they didn’t make us wait another four years for the next release!

Woslom – Beyond Inferno

Sonntag, Januar 11th, 2009

This three song EP from Brazilian thrashers Woslom is an impressive package. The music, early Metallica vein, is played well. Vocalist/rhythm guitarist Tiago’s voice is deeper than Hetfield’s, but his phrasing shows a definite influence from Metallica’s frontman. In fact, the uptempo song ‘Payback’ sounds like it could have been recorded in the Kill ‘m All period. ‘What Lies Within’ is a well executed mid-tempo number, which contains some heavier riffs and clean vocals of Tiago. ‘No Tomorrow’ has a catchy, hardcore-like tune with nice tempo changes (tip!). Well produced, classic early thrash and intelligently written passages.

Zonaria – Evolution Overdose

Sonntag, Januar 11th, 2009

These young boys coming from Sweden accomplished a very good work indeed, considering how old they are. Aged 16-18 , while designing other bands’ site, they asked themselves why they didn’t have their own band and so released their first demo called “Evolution Overdose” . With 6 tracks they convince us with full of melodic and atmospheric attitude, you can also hear some influences by Pain and Dimmu Borgir, so you find yourself in a very different culmination. The jewel of the demo is definitely “Imaginery Enemy”, with it you acquire an enthralling taste. The neverending keybords that accompanies has a beautiful harmony with the music and the vocal added to this is very pleasing.Though this is their first demo they shared the same stage with bands that we cannot dismiss; Dismember, Centinex, Crucified Barbara,Nocturnal Rites. The new single will be mixed by Jonas Kjellgren who we all know from Centinex and Scar Symmetry. In conclusion, young but talented and we will hear their names in the future. Give you ears to these young deathmetallers!
