I would describe Evocation’s music as modern, sad, gloomy, emotional, dark, atmospheric Rock. I would rather say that they play some kind of Gothic Hard Rock than Metal, so if you only like bands such as Cannibal Corpse, this is not going to be your thing. But it was worth listening to though.
Gothic Rock with modern overtones is the main event in Nightdancer. This makes them more accessible, they are not experimental even if they have electronics and other intriguing sounds. The songs have more to them than you might think at first. While they appear straight forward and easy going, there is a world beyond the arrangements. The acoustic/clean guitar pieces sound very nice. Their talent definitely reaches the surface here. Evocation loosens up the heavy passages with these acoustic interludes and slower-paced, more mellow parts, yet still maintaining the flow within the composition.
The songs are good, but I still think that there is room for improvement, I am sure that they could write better songs than this because I see great musicianship. So it’s good, but could be even better. The only thing that doesn’t work for me are the vocals. They somehow lack power and expression throughout some parts of the demo. It doesn’t really convince me at times. The whole album is good, so I could not mention a single song that did stand out, while the production overall sounds great. Evocation is a band that could leave their mark in the modern areas of Gothic Rock. They bring traditional elements, but adjusted to their own rules by adding a lot of detail.

Evocation spielen rollenden Dunkel-Metal, der sich dem düsteren Rock europäischer, gotischer Prägung verbunden fühlt.
Dabei besteht für die Band die Würze in einem Schuss unpathetischer Melodramatik, die sie in das metallische Gerüst ihrer Songs zu integrieren versuchen.
Evocation haben sich 2001 durch drei Gründungsmitglieder formiert und sind seit Anfang 2004 komplett. In der Formierungsphase entstanden die beiden Demos “Less” (2002) und “Fogdiver” (2003).
Mit der soeben fertig gestellten EP “Nightdancer” (Mai 2004) feiert die nunmehr vollständige Besetzung ihren Einstand.
