Fallen Yggdrasil – In no sense Innocence

Montag, Januar 12th, 2009

Fallen Yggdrasil is a German death metalband, and ‘In no sense innocence’ is their second release (I think). In the biography, I saw that lots of other zines gave this band tremendously high scores, and things like ‘intense’ and ‘original’ were often said about the band. Even though all the 10 out of 10 scores seem to be a bit exaggerated, I agree with my colleagues from the other zines that this is a very good band. The first thing I notice when I start the CD is the very clear sound of the album. I especially like the sound of the double bassdrums, and not only that, but the drummer seems to be fond of his kickdrums as well; he uses them a lot, and I don’t mind that at all!

The vocals are a mix between deathmetal and hardcore vox, and they sound fine as well. The guitars are good, relatively technical, and the riffs are original and varied enough to make the whole album interesting. Not a boring moment, and thats the best thing about this MCD! All the songs have their own identities and only after a few times listening they keep sticking in your head.

Fallen Yggdrasil isn’t just ordinairy US skullsmashing deathmetal, they write intelligent songs, that sound FRESH! They combine agression with some more melodic elements, and I think that sometimes they sound more like a technical thrashmetal band than a true deathmetal band. Don’t let that describtion deter you from trying this band, I strongly doubt they will dissapoint you.

Fallen Yggdrasil – Prospect of Prey

Montag, Januar 12th, 2009

1. Save Me (In the Name of God) 4:31

2. In the Fire 4:06

3. Memory Assassin 5:06

Fallen Yggdrasil are a German Melodic Death Metal act. For whoever receives the opportunity to get Prospect of Prey into their hands, it is a true piece of beauty. The CD literally has a golden shine to it. The band itself has gone through a pretty impressive lifespan as well. Since being forged in 1997, they have released demos, tapes, split-tapes and EP’s, were under the Supreme Chaos label for some years, are currently about to release a self-financed full-length and played gigs along side great names such as Pro Pain, Dismember, Sodom, God Dethroned, Centinex and Holy Moses with an average close to 20 concerts a year.

When comparing Prospect of Prey to their previous release, Building Up A Ruin To Come, you can hear they’ve progressed into a faster, more technical and extreme formation in the Death Metal genre. Fallen Ygdrassil’s Melodic Death mostly leans towards a Pagan sound. You could say they are influenced by bands such as Tiamat, but you can even find Power and Trash Metal elements into their music. Especially the guitar work is very Trash orientated. There is also nothing Progressive to it. They swear their allegiance to the old-school sound and roots of Death Metal.

Prospect of Prey is in the first place a promotional demo and you can immediately sense this by the opener track Save Me (In The Name of God). It is an absolute hammer in, probably one of the best tracks ever written by Fallen Yggdrasil. Some brilliant heroic vocals combined with very clever and catchy guitar riffs. After this, the demo passes on to the double-bass-driven and dynamic In The Fire. To end with, Memory Assassin is the sing-along-at-gigs track of the demo. It is a very powerful, first class stomper with a lot of hit potential. All three songs are indulged with typical Fallen Yggdrasil melodies which have turned into their trademark. A down-point would be both In The Fire and Memory Assassin end with a somewhat misplaced fade-out. It almost feels like you are listening to samples. Also, the production quality leaves room for improvement, though it is still clear and the right framework for the sound Fallen Yggdrasil is bringing.

Fallen Yggdrasil are on the outlook for a new label deal and therefore, have a do-it-yourself promo kit on their website where you can download both the songs and the covers of Prospect of Prey, so what are you waiting for!

Title: “In no sense Innocence” MCD

Label: Supreme Chaos Records (SCR 03)

Style: Varied Death Metal

Running time: 24 minutes (6 songs)

Street date: February 2003

Since 1997 FALLEN YGGDRASIL are working on their musical vision unimpressed of trends. The band from Tübingen / Germany mixes brutal Death Metal with melodic elements and parts that are more or less unusual in this genre. The present result of their work is the MCD “In no sense Innocence” which will be out in February 2003.

BIOGRAPHY:

*In 1997 FALLEN YGGDRASIL came to life.

*In 1998 FALLEN YGGDRASIL entered the scene with their first official demo “Odyssey in Sorrow”. “Odyssey…” recieved very good reviews and sold in a four-digit edition. Back then the band was already awarded “intensity” and “originality” and it was called “one of the most promising acts”. Following this, FALLEN YGGDRASIL played a lot of concerts at home and abroad also with more known bands such as Night In Gales, Centinex, Goddess Of Desire, Fleshcrawl and many more.

*In the beginning of the year 2000 this success was continued through the release of a 7″ (limited to 500 copies, sold-out) until the trend was being held back by line-up changes.

*In 2001 a “completely renewed” band played around 30 concerts in Germany and abroad. Prepared like this the Maranis-Studios were entered in October where “In no sense Innocence” was recorded under the guidance of Vagelis Maranis (ex-Sanvoisen).

*In 2002 “In no sense Innocence” was released as a self-financed record and it recieved very good reviews (see press). The band also kept up the live activities of the years gone-by and couldn`t even be held up by some new line-up changes in the spring of 2002. End of 2002 FALLEN YGGDRASIL joined forces with the German label SUPREME CHAOS RECORDS, which offered to re-release “In no sense Innocence” under their flag.

*Now, in 2003 the official edition of “In no sense Innocence” is ready to be unleashed upon mankind.
